Rouen is most famous as the city where Jeanne d'Arc was burnt at the stake nearly 600 years ago. There is a huge cross in the market place to signify the exact position where she died, and it is a very sombre experience to stand there and look out at the mediaeval houses surrounding this market place, knowing that it is the same scene she saw as she succumbed to the flames. On the other side of the market place is the Jeanne d'Arc Museum, very small, but most interesting for anyone who is interested in the life of St Jeanne.
