| The city of Rome is unique for me because of its many fine buildings that span so many centuries of history and it is so rich in masterpieces, both artistic and architectural. This was my second visit to the 'Eternal City'. I came from a cruise ship which docked at the port of Civitavecchia and travelled by train from the port, which took almost 2 hours and cost 9 euros return and then picked up the 'Metro' to get around the city, costing a further euro. It was a great way to travel and great value for money and so much cheaper than many other organised trips! I was honoured to see the Pope speaking live outside St. Peter's Basilica, in St. Peter's Square and then I spent a large amount of time in the Vatican Museum and the Sistene Chapel, which was highlighted for me by Michelangelo's masterpieces. A visit to the Spanish Steps, which is a picturesque square with 137 steps from top to bottom and a visit to the beautiful Trevi Fountain rounded off another memorable day in this lively city before returning back to the port of Civitavecchia to cruise away into the evening sunset.

What a fabulous long weekend destination Rome is. We visited Rome in July for 3 days on Fri am - Sun pm trip. In these 3 days we managed to visit the Vatican City (including an organised tour of the museum, largely booked to avoid the queues), the Colleseum, Trevee Fountain, Roman Forums, Palentine Hill and a soak in of the Roman atmosphere in the variety of lovely Piazza's.
Rome is a great destination and we thoroughly enjoyed the Piazza Novona where a daytime coffee and soak in the atmosphere is a must. Also highly recommended would be taking the sightseeing buses which are an excellent way to get around the city whilst understanding more about the area.

Rome is the most amazing city I've ever visited. You can just walk around for hours in amazement. Anyone reading this who has never been just go! Get the cheapest hotel if you like as you won't spend anytime there as there's so much to do and see. I plan to go back there at least once a year from now on
