We docked early one morning at Naples on a cruise ship and spent the morning looking around the port and harbour. Our impression was that the area around the port and harbour was possibly a little run down. The afternoon was spent visiting the ruins of the ancient city of Herculaneum, which was reached by a short trip by coach. Herculaneum is an amazing place of historical interest, but is not recommended for people to visit if walking over uneven surfaces is a problem. There are many steps and gradients to challenge the visitor to this amazing place of historical interest. Sun screen, sun hats and water were also a 'must' as the guided tour of Herculaneum lasted over 2 hours and the heat was quite intense on a late September afternoon. The ruins of Herculaneum are certainly well worth a visit for anyone interested in ancient history.
