The Swiss Riviera, with Montreux at its centre, has not yet become a tourist mecca. We stayed in an apartment in the small and quiet town of Chexbres, just a few kilometres west of Montreux. It was possible to visit both Vevey and Montreux with very little difficulty, by travelling on a small train which services towns on the banks of Lac Leman, from Geneva to Montreux and beyond. Halfway between Chexbres and Montreaux is Vevey, a charming town with a bustling market and an outdoor cafe which overlooks the market. The shopping is good here, as it is in Montreux. Standing on the edge of the lake in this part of Switzerland as night falls, the lights of French villages on the far side of the lake twinkle invitingly. Look out for the "Douglas" outlets in Switzerland where cosmetics and perfumes are cheaper than in the regular department stores.
