The Ligurian coast is not to be missed. The magical little towns of the Cinque Terre (Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore) are painted the most amazing colours - it's a technicolour dream. They are linked together by a coastal path high up on the cliff overlooking the Mediterranean. For those who cannot walk the distance from town to town, there is a small train which follows the same route. I wanted the challenge of conquering the coastal path, and my husband fancied the train, so I met him at each station. The town of Portofino is a few kilometres to the north - we were there on a day of flooding rains so could not take full advantage of this much hyped part of Italy. We needed a coffee break and expected superior coffee at outrageous prices but what we got was weak and forgettable coffee at outrageous prices.
