This was my first diving experience and what a place to start, the Great Barrier Reef!! I wasn't a Paddy or BSAC or any other qualification diver, but was allowed to do an 'instructor dive' where an instructor takes you 'one to one' up to 10 metres down. It is a lot more expensive to do it this way but saves you doing a full course. There are a few basic skills to demonstrate which are required for an instructor.
As for diving in the reef, the types of coral and fish are incredible and every bright colour you can imagine. This really is the ultimate place to dive 9although I have nothing to compare it with).
For all those divers and none divers, make the most of my experiences in the Great Barrier Reef. Book a diving trip with CDC (Cairns Dive Center) to the outer reef (not inner reef which is much poorer) and either do your Padi qualification on the trip or use your exisitng Padi to experience the 'blue'.
The outer reef is the most amazing experience on earth and you will see more colours than you have ever seen before. Strongly recommend goign in the Oz summer. I dived on Xmas day in 40 degrees weather. Much better than a white Christmas in England.
The outer reef contains so many different types of Marine life that are fascinating along with the different types of Coral.
If you're not a diver you can do 'instructor dives'. These allow you to experience diving without having any dive qualifications. You obviously are closely watched by an instructor who will be sure you can do a few basic skills in order partake on an instructor dive.
If you aren't into diving, snorkeling the reef is almnost as satisfying. All of the main colours and fish are near the surface and you will get a great view of these from snorkeling.
The biggest myth are box jellyfish out on the reefs. THEY DO NOT EXIST ON THE OUTER REEF. In fact all of the jellyfish you may come across on the outer reef at worst will give a 'nettle' sting which is more of a slight irritation than actually something that hurts. You can always get 'stinger suits' if you are overly paranoid about jellyfish.
