Post    The Wolcott - 4 West, 31st Street, Manhattan, New York - Se

Being a typical Virgo I organised this trip like a military operation, researched everything on the internet and saved myself loads of cash! Paid $504 for 4 nights at the Wolcott (including all the confusing taxes etc)which was great value considering the price of other places. Included tea/coffee and muffins for breakfast in the foyer.

The twin room was OK, bedding clean, bathroom fine, but the desk staff were very unhelpful and didn't want to assist, no matter what the query. The hotel was one or two blocks down from the Empire State Building but after 4 days we got fed up of schlepping uptown so next time I think we'll pay that bit extra and stay between Time Square and Central Park.

We did all the usual tourist things but also watched the Yankees play baseball (very confusing, left half way through), took a 15 minute helicopter ride with Liberty Helicopters (booked via internet) which was great although the pilot was literally just a pilot and not a tour guide. He gave us very little information on what we were actually looking at. We went to the theatre to see Chicago and the seats were great, the show fantastic.

Didn't think the 'great shops' such as Bloomies, Saks etc were up to much and we didn't seem to find the bargains everyone always talks about in any other shops ....but we're going to try and find them next time!

Restaurants - We went to Rosie O'Grady's (lovely food), Virgil's Real BBQ (very little choice of any food, even BBQ! food OK tho), Il Menestrello (had set menu, lovely surroundings, food nice) and The View, a revolving restaurant in the Marriott Hotel, 45 or so floors above Time Square. Didn't get to see very much, believe it or not, because all the action is going on immediately below you so you can't see it! Meal was a work of art (yes, I took a photo of it!).

All in all the holiday was great fun. I'd recommend hopping in a rickshaw if you can find one, really cheesy and lots of laughs. Booked pretty much everything (theatre, baseball, helicopter, evening meals etc) over the internet so it was all really easy when we got there. God bless the internet! One thing to watch - everything is priced excluding taxes and gratuities of all kinds so these really bumped the bills up all round.

Post    Wellington Hotel - New York - feb 2005

where do i start the wellington hotel offers a great location but that has to be all thats great with this dive of a hotel.

when we checked in the staff never even spoke to us then we were offered a room which we had specifically asked for non smoking which turned out to be smoking, it was the smallest room i'd ever seen and it smelt as if something had just died in it. so we complained to reception and they apparently ''upgraded'' us to a room on the 21st floor. when we walked in the room was again a smoking room, the carpet was stained, there was coffee marks up the walls, the bath plug was clogged with hair, the airvents were thick of dust and the bed spreads had blood on them!!!!!!! needless to say we weren't happy so we complained again and were rudley told that that was the best they had to offer and gave us new sheets!!

we did try to book into another hotel but as this was valentines day everywhere was fully booked..so after lying on towels as we didn't trust the new sheets we had to grin and bear it......take my advise the hotel does come cheap but in new york you do get what you pay for......dont stay in the wellington, try the waldorf!!!!

Post    Shoreham Hotel West 55th Street - Dec 2006

Compared to many hotels in New York this was small but perfectly formed. Our room was small but manageable with flat screen tv and bose stereo. Huge shower in the bathroom. The beds were really comfortable with comfy pillows and duvets. The decor throughout the hotel was very modern. The staff were excellent. We were 5 mins walk from central park and 15 mins walk from Times Square. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. If you want to go to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island get there way before it opens, we tried twice and the queue was 2 hours long (in the freezing cold) so didnt bother. Get a New York Pass as this can save you queueing for some attractions like the Empire State building (they queue round the block.)

You have to go to New York at least once in your life!!

Post    Quality Inn (Broadway) - New York - Feb 2004

This hotel was in great need of decoraton and refurbishing. The first room we were given had handles falling from the very old furniture and was so small we had to store our cases between the wall and the beds. We couldnt close the blinds as the wand for doing this was missing so between the light and the noise at 4am we had to rise early. The hotel did move us to a slightly better room only the radiator made so much nosie it was a choice of heat or sleep.

This seems to be the hotel for study groups for teenagers who dont consider other people are in the hotel trying to sleep. If you do stay here and book your taxi through the hotel it is more expensive than a yellow taxi and does not include the toll fee. The tour buses have an all loops tour for $48 each and it lasts for 48 hours this was a great saving as you can do all the tours over the two days for not much more than a single tour ticket.

Apart from the very poor quality of the hotel New York is a great place to visit.

Post    Hotel Novotel - New York - 24/5/03

We flew to New York on American Airlines which was fantastic, so much more leg-room even in economy. On arrival at the Novotel we were amazed how central it was, our very clean and comfortable room overlooked "Times Square". The staff were marvellous, very helpful. We visited all the main sites, especially enjoying taking the elevator to the top of the Empire State Building.

Having a 14 yr old daughter with us meant that we had to do the shops!. She loved Bloomingdales, Macy's and especcially China Town where she purchased fake (very good too)designer handbags and watches for around £5 each, thought she had got the bargain of the century by bringing home a Gucci bag for £5.! Would not say the restaurants are particularly great, we love spicy food but have always found the food in America to be quite bland and New York was no exception.

Do not miss a horse drawn carriage ride around Central Park, it ccosts around 40 dollars per carriage (seats 4) ffor 30 mins but is so worth it, so relaxing and peaceful, hard to imagine you are still in the Big Apple.
We felt very safe in New York, we walked up Broadway at midnight and did not have cause to feel threatened at all.

Post    The New Yorker Hotel - New York City - oct & nov 2004

The New Yorker is such a brilliant hotel I just had to go back again last year (twice) and have booked for this year again!!!

The hotel is very 'old worldy' so dont expect the Ritz. It is however clean, well situated and at the end of the day - who spends alot of time in their hotel room when in NYC. If you fly in to Newark you can get the Coach USA bus service and this takes you straight to the hotel, you just ask for a ticket to Penn Station and the first stop is the hotel New Yorker (costs aprx 10$ each way and only takes half an hour. it also runs every half hour, going and coming from the airport). I first went to this hotel in 2003, went back last year in October with my husband and 3 kids, then back again in November with my friends (girls shopping trip) and have booked again for this december. ican honestly say that I have not got a bad word to say about it. You must try the Tick Tock diner for breakfast, infact try it for all food, its amazing! You can also call them and they'll bring up some tea/coffee and cakes to you - takes around 5 mins.

This hotel is brill if you want to shop till you drop...its a 5 minute walk from Macys and another 5 minutes will have you on 5th ave. If your looking for bargains especially Louis Vuitton, then head to China Town..take the subway from the corner of Macys and head to Canal Street - thought I was in 7th heaven when I got here. Also head out to Woodbury Common for your designer outlets, this costs 35$ return and my advice would be to get the 0830hrs bus from Port Authority to here, it takes around and hour and you'll just arrive in time for the shops opening. Make sure you wear comfy shoes as there's alot to get around.

The rooms in the hotel are not massive however they are adequate for sleeping in and clean. The bathrooms are very 'art deco' but again clean.
I hope that when you do go you have ads mcuh fun as I've had in this City.

Post    Milford Plaza - New York - going abroad-dec 03

flight with virgin was great, excellent service. hotel unfortunatly was NOT good service, rude and uninformative. room shabby very small but clean. Lobby nice on entering giving false impression.

New York in my opinion did not live up to its name. the people are abrupt and rude. In fairness it was TOO cold to enjoy being outside, although going round Central Park on coach and horse was lovely. trip to statue of Liberty awe inspriring, but again in December the ferry trip was freezing. Eating out is expensive and not a lot of variety. The Italian restaraunt left of hotel (sorry forgot name) was lovely food though. Times square is awsome!! Always been my dream to go. But once was definatley enought. And cannot wait for my return trip to Cyprus in May (WHooopppeeee)

Post    Milford Plaza - Manhattan - sept 2006

arrived by american airlines thats how to fly. pre booked the blue bus to hotel NEVER AGAIN driver rude not a good driver and demands a tip even if he has keep't you at the airport for nearly an hour getting extra passangers. arrived at hotel eventualy. first impression good. hotel wanted credit card details only.
given keys to room no bag service . room very small for four adults shower didn't work properly. staff not very helpful, forgot to tip maid first day result no towels.

your opposite the playpen a girlie place there are a number of slezzie video storesin the area so expect to have to prove your a resident by showing your room keys each time you return, they don't want the place becoming a knocking shop but why advertise seedy adult films on the tv.
considered arranging return trip to airport with hotel cost $26 per person accross road down two blocks is port authority bus station cost $16 travels every 20 mins.

new york fun but paronoid expect the airport routine at each major attraction. if you hope to go inside the statue of liberty book early , you will be limited to twenty mins but your not allowed inside . take the audio tour instead. the circle line boat trip around island a must the guide was simply the best.
if you want a place to drop your bags and explore this hotel five minutes walk from times square is the place. if you like the hotel experience go elsewhere

Post    The Mansfield Hotel - New York- March 2003

First trip to New York - it was absolutely fantastic. The hotel is spot on for location on 44th and 5th. The rooms are slightly small but not a problem as you dont spend that much time in them anyway. We were there for St. Patricks Day and well worth the effort. We had some great weather and were able to stroll through the streets of New York quite safely, taking precautions as you have to for any city. Police are plentiful and helpful. The sites are "awesome". The New York people we met were great and welcoming to us English folk. Cant wait for the repeat visit.

Post    Holiday Inn - New York - Sept 2003

Decided to visit New York for a couples od days and then on to New England touring by Tritan Tours. The Holiday Inn New York hotel was dreadful - would not stay there again, the rooms were not clean and the staff didn't seem to care very much.

Went to a different hotel every night on tour from then on and stayed mainly in Best Western Hotel, which were quite good but the Comfort Inn Suites were terrible. Went to Italian restaurant in that hotel at about 7.30 pm and waited 1 hour to be seated then was told the lasagne was off the menu so ordered chicken in breadcrumbs. when it arrived there was no potato and uncooked veg and swimming in some sort of see through liquid - dreadful.

We ent to New England to see the leaves and colours in countryside - unless you are interested in american history, don't go. We actually did'nt see the leaves turning as the weather has been to warm - another 2 weeks on (second week of October) would have been better.

Will not go on a tour again - found it too tiring sitting on coaches for hours at a time.

Post    Hilton Hotel and Towers - New York City - Feb 26th to March

My/Our Holiday Opinion: This was our very first long haul trip.
We went to New York to celebrate my 30th birthday March 1st, we left our 3 sons with their grandparents and flew off from Heathrow with American Airlines who we were very impressed with
Pete was also worried about leg room as he is 6ft 3 but he was fine and we enjoyed the choice of movies (on our own little screens) and also the food and drinks.

The hotel has a great location, it is just off 5th Avenue so great for shopping and it is also near beautiful Central Park (which really is amazing in the snow)
We also did the horse drawn carriage ride through the park but did it at night so it was extra beautiful,
our carriage driver was great telling us where stars lived, films made and he even gave us a free lift along 5th Avenue and dropped us off in lively Times Square.

We ewnt up the Empire State Building which has the best views of the city and out to sea with Statue of Liberty.
We took the Ellis Island ferry to the statue and went up it which was amazing too.

We did the shops too, Bloomingdales and Macy's were brilliant, we also went to Century 21 where the only thing I found was a Guess purse.
It is just across the road from the heartbreaking sight of Ground Zero, we felt we couldn't come to New York without paying our respects but unlike many others we felt it was not appropriate to take photos of it.

I would reccomend New York to anyone as it was an unforgettable experience and one of the memories I will have forever is the sight of Manhattan at night (well 5.30am) as we were in the taxi on our way back to JFK.
