On the main road from Dublin to Cork you will pass Cashel (unless the bypass is opened). Don't bypass but opt for 24 hours at a guest house in or around the town. Take a half day to visit The Rock, a spectacular ruin on a rocky outcrop.
Then stroll round and see other abbeys and The Palace Hotel where it is said the first pint of Guinness was made and where Jackie Kennedy stayed.
