Most of the comments listed by other reviewers are accurate but give the impression that the hotel and resort is lacking. The hotel is very clean and comfortable, the staff are polite and helpful. The food is plentiful, well cooked and frankly for the money excellent value. Everything is extremely cheap out there, you will be rich. Eating out is a pleasure we ate at Raphael's italian restaurant most afternoons - for all 3 of us to eat and drink always came to less than a tenner!
The beach was lovely, the lifeguards very attentive, however there were a lot of jellyfish in the sea! Give the swimming pool a miss it was filthy, the pool next door in Victoria Palace was 100 times better and nobody cares if you use it. The Rep was very helpful but when the pool filter broke other tour guests received a reduction in their bill for staying in the room til late checkout however our rep never mentioned anything - it was only £17 but it was the principle of the matter.
All in all an excellent holiday and I would go back. But only if the Flights become more family friendly.

Decided to try Bulgaria for a change as heard lots of good reports. Booked with Balkan 3 weeks prior as they offered a free child place out of Durham Tees Valley which made the holiday affordable.
Went for the Hotel Fenix which has been recently renovated and upgraded to a 4* from a 3*. This is situated at the end of the Sunny Beach Resort which turned out to be the best end.
Flights with Balkan Air are very basic in very old aeroplanes but they do the job of getting you from A to B.
Hotel rooms were nice and spacious but damp. Luckily we had a room on the sixth floor away from all the noise outside on the very busy streets. Food catered for the continental holidaymaker and was disappointing. The same thing every single night for evening meal.No entertainment at this hotel at all so be prepared to go out for it.
Sunny Beach itself is extremely bustling especially in the centre, noisy and rowdy.
The beach is lovely but you have to pay 6 Levs for a Parasol and 6 Levs for a sunbed which is approx. £2 each otherwise you have to sit at the very back of the beach as this is free.
We like to visit places and found this difficult as nowhere to go apart from Nessabur which is a 20p. bus ride away.
On the whole if you like to sit and sunbathe all day and do the round of bars on a night you would enjoy it. Just avoid low floor rooms and the centre of the resort because the noise is unbearable from drunken gangs of youths all night. Within 2 years this will be another Magaluf, San Antonio type resort.

What a poor Hotel. we ate out after trying two days of the Hotel food. Luckly enough this was cheap and the resaurant standards are excellent and you can bet you would get a good meal. The pool is excellent even though you do get charged for the sunbeds.
The resort is excellent very friendly people lots to do and see. You must visit Nessebar a lovely place. Don't change you money in the booths on the street. The rep was useless. The maids can everyday to clean the rooms the towels were like pieces of sandpaper, and since returning home we have found the maids were light fingered as well because some of my jewellery has disappered.
We will definately go back to Bulgaria but make sure we stay in a 5* hotel.

i went in september 2005, first impression was excellent the hotel did not look like a 3 star rooms nice clean staff are pleasant (when they could understand you).
the problem with this hotel is not the location as it is close to everything, it is the food while i was there everyone and i mean everyone took sick with the food the rep at the time saud that it was not people went home early my 2 year old got told that he could not fly home. his mattress was soiled and they replaced it with 1 folded up blanket as they had none left. The rep was not there wahen she was needed she was supposed to star at 10.00 most days she did no turn up till 11 or 12.
there was no entertainment on what so ever, all inclusive i don't think so.
i would not go here all inclusive it would be ok self catering.

Excellent holiday all round from start to finish. Quick transfer from airport to accommodation. Fantastic apartment, glad we booked the 4* 2 bedroomed apartment, complete with air conditioning (a necessity in August we thought) and washing machine! Spacious, very clean - not one cockroach spotted all two weeks! Maids came in every day and made/changed beds, changed towels and even did the washing up! Never had this treatment before anywhere!
Visited Sunny Beach 10 years ago, when it was mainly woodland/forest and wanted to revisit at sometime, so 10 years on and there are obvious transformations. Is fast becoming the next Ibiza/Faliraki we would say within the next 2-3 years, which is a shame, but our two boys enjoyed all the hussle and bustle, so did we actually - went in a different restaurant every night. Not one bad meal all holiday (and we are very keen mediterranean eaters - none of your fish/chips/burgers merchants! Although these were plentiful if you wanted them. Prices are ridiculously cheap, it's unbelievable! Came back with more money than we took! Beach was huge and relatively clean (the usual scattering of cigarette butts around; otherwise very clean). A visit to Nessebar was a welcome change, as the old town was very picturesque and more quaint - still with plenty of shops/restaurants though!
The only downside to our holiday though was the busy road we had to cross from the Bravo Apartments to the resort centre (we jokingly called it the M25!) Could do with a footbridge or under-pass really. The other negative is I'm afraid, Balkan Airlines, which are much to be desired. The flight only took 2 3/4hrs, but there was no entertainment on board (no tv's/radio stations). I usually love airline food, but this is the only one I have hardly touched - plastic salad, identical meals both on the outward and inbound flights and the cabin staff, didn't seem to put themselves out either. Still overall, we had an exceptional holiday and would love to return to Bulgaria again, but try another resort next time!

Plus points of Amfora is the location, the little train is great and arrives every 15 mins or less (be aware Sept or later the frequency may change.)
Negative points - to be honest its a little shabby and needs a bit of TLC and a lick of paint! Its a shame to have pay for Air con or a fan in a three star hotel these days. The carpets in the rooms needs taking out as they are stained and old. We were not expecting too much and would advise anyone coming to Bulgaria to go for a higher class hotel (there are some superb ones) or to go self catering. The only other thing I can really mention about this hotel was the barman (on the non-inclusive side) he was miserable and no matter how hard we tried he did not break a smile!.
We ate twice in the hotel (the food is edible but repetitive) and drank once (we were charged 11 levs for a Bacardi and Coke which costs average 5lev in town).
All in all its ok but nothing special!
Having said all that we were just looking forward to experiencing Bulgaria, and even the rotten weather (I have never seen rain like it) did not spoil our enjoyment. This is a great place and the people are friendly and try really hard to speak English. It works both ways though so make an effort yourselves! Nessebar is amazing and dont just go for the shops - go into the museums and find out about the history.
Go to Bulgaria with an open mind, its not Spain (well about 20 years ago), this is a poor Country trying very hard to get financially straight, if you want spotless beaches, no beggars and to pay £2.00 for a pint stick to Spain/Greece. If you want an experience, beautiful scenery and to learn about a new Country and pay 60p for a pint (and buy loads of cheap clothes, eat out for £3.00 a head - go to Bulgaria - walk the length of the beach, we will be back!
P.S. We felt totally safe and the only trouble there was from a couple of Brits!

Prime Location to the excellent beach.
Hotel is excellent with very pleasant and helpful staff.Rooms Very clean and compact.Pool area smaller than advertised but never crowded.
Small train ride into center at a cost of 2 lev per person.
Food in Hotel not of a great standard or variety but you must try and if needed eat out as it is very cheap.
Expect delays either in bound or out bound as it is organised chaos from the bulgarian end.
Overall an excellent location and holiday.
