Just across the Mediterranean from the Strait of Gibraltar, lies Morocco with a coastline on both the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Morocco has borders with Western Sahara to the S, Algeria to the E and the Spanish North African territories of Ceuta and Melilla on the Mediterranean coast in the N.

Morocco is the closest African country to Europe but it is a world away in culture and landscape. The country's main appeal for visitors is the cultural experience, Mediterranean climate, intriguing high quality crafts and its exotic appeal. However, many travellers enjoy a slightly different experience in hiking the Rif and High Atlas Mountains and braving the sands of the Western Sahara, on camelback, horseback or Off Road vehicle.

Whether the attraction is the sunshine, a trek through the mountains or the hot desert sands, you're sure to enjoy the experience of the Medieval medinas of the cities, particularly in Fez and Marrakech, where the souks and squares attract snake charmers and the stench of the tanners' yards pervades the air.

Morocco also boasts a variety of ancient monuments and magnificent buildings that reflect a turbulent history shaped by its strategic location. With interest from the Romans, ancient Greeks, Arabs and a successful battle against European powers (France and Spain) giving Morocco independence in 1956, the country has evolved to become a magical mystery of the ages with its own personal modern day stamp.
