Gabon is a country in west central Africa sharing borders with the Gulf of Guinea, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon and the Republic of the Congo.
Outside Libreville (the Capital of Gabon), just about everything is still as nature intended. An incredible 10% of the country is national parks and the current government is very happy to keep it that way. Travellers, tourists and conservationists are welcome and miners, loggers and resource gathering companies are not welcome. Tourists and travellers happy to do long days of trekking are rewarded with seeing wild animals in their own pristine habitat. Primate filled rainsforests amongst other wild animals are almost certain to be encountered and provide an experience like no other. A 4x4 vehicle and a bit of French speaking knowledge would certainly help with such an adventure. Aside, from jungle trekking, It is possible to explore endless white-sand beaches along with estuaries and rolling Savannahs. Possibly the most beautiful of the country's parks is Loango National Park (located on the S Gabon coast), which is renowned for its hippos. In E Gabon there is the Ivindo National Park, boasting its own eco-camp and resident wild animals such as elephants and gorillas. If you want a break from nature and are after something a little bit more like the Western World, then there is the capital Libreville. Everything you'd expect from a built up city can be found here such as busy and bustling streets, pollution and even fast food restaurants and bars imported from the West. All in all, a trip to Gabon provides a real taste of nature with a stop off in Libreville providing your home comforts. |
