Mozart's birthplace and setting for the film "The Sound of Music", Salzburg has for many years been a honey pot for anyone interested in culture, classical music, European history and baroque architecture. The city's most famous native son fled for Vienna in 1781, but today the composer is honored with museums, a public square, an airport, a university, and a chocolate candy known as Mozartkugeln.

Salzburg is one of the prettiest cities you're likely to encounter in your European travels--especially if you spend most of your time in the Altstadt on the left bank of the Salzach River, which probably has more masterpieces of Baroque architecture per hectare than any other city on Earth.

The town, which has a population of 145,000, lies beneath the cliffs of the Mönchsberg, a rocky hill that is topped by the massive fortress of the Hohensalzburg.

It is a charming, refined old city of cobbled streets, ornate churches, narrow 17th- and 18th-century buildings, history-steeped cafes, picturesque courtyards and intriguing passageways, with the sound of Mozart seemingly played from every window. Most of tourist interest lies in the generally pedestrianised old town, sandwiched between the river and Monchsberg Mountain and covering around ¾ ml by 500 yds, an area easy to discover on foot.

There is something of interest for all ages, whether singles, couples or groups, but particularly history and classical-music lovers (especially Mozart); "The Sound of Music" fans.

From camping on the outskirts to internationally renowned hotels in the centre, Salzburg has something for every pocket, although middlemarket hotels predominate.
