Seefeld Travel Guide: Travel and tourist information, things to do and see in Seefeld

Seefeld is a great year-round holiday destination. It has a good snow record and most of the slopes have snowmaking facilities. In terms of Alpine skiing and boarding, there is a 23km ski field a bus ride away, that mostly caters to beginners and lower intermediates.

Seefeld is a large, lively, open resort with a busy pedestrianised central area, set around St Oswald's church, where most of the shops, restaurants, bars and supermarkets are situated. It offers a good range of amenities, including the Olympia sports centre and a popular casino, which attracts well-heeled types throughout the year

Seefeld offers an efficient ski school and kids are well looked after. There are a few challenges for experts off the Rosshutte, but they can also head for the Stubai or Zugspitz glaciers and any of the other Tyrolean resorts. Skiing and boarding aren't the main reason why people come to Seefeld. By far the biggest sport is cross-country with 200km of trails.

Seefeld has hosted two Winter Olympics (1964 and 1976) and the 1985 Nordic skiing World Championships. A popular area for toursits because of this.

Village: 3,960 ft. Highest lifts: 7,339 ft. Good snow quality is hampered by a preponderance of sunny S-facing slopes at relatively low altitude that cannot hold snow beyond March.

A popular destination year-round, summer visitors tend to be more mature, attracted by the outstanding scenery and facilities, while winter attracts the younger, sporty set.

Seefield is situated in the W spur of Austria, in N-central Tyrol (10 mls S of the German border, 18 mls NW of Innsbruck, 15 mls from its airport, 100 mls S of Munich and its airport). Seefield is situated on a broad, sunny plateau, between the Karwendel and Wetterstein mountains.

In general terms, Seefeld's clientele makes it more of a mature resort, and middle- to upmarket. This doesn't mean that it's staid by any means. Plenty to do for all types and ages, although teenage groups seeking unrestrained nightlife will be disappointed. Advanced skiers will find little challenge, but beginners and family groups will find it a rewarding choice.

The ski-school operates every day of the week.

2 major types of ski-pass: one that is valid at Seefeld, Reith, Mosern and Neuleutasch, and another (good for 3 to 21 days) that is valid in the above-mentioned places, plus Mittenwald, Garmisch-Zugspitze, Erhwald, Lermoos, Biberwier, Bichlbach, Heiterwang and Berwang.

There are plenty of non-skiing pursuits to complement the idea that this is an all-round resort and not just a ski venue. If you want the full Austrian Alpine experience, Seefeld is well worth a visit.

In the daytime winter activities include alpine skiing, snowboarding, ice-skating, curling, cross-country skiing, sleigh rides, winter-walking trails. Ffor those who would like to stay warmer there is Indoor swimming pool, tennis, squash, bowling, fitness studio, and golf. In summer, lake bathing, swimming, horse riding, golf, mountain biking and hiking.

The Nightlife brings a few pubs, discos and nightclubs and lots of stylish little cafes. Tyrolean music venues. A large Casino. Most hotels offer an alternative evening entertainment.

Most restaurants tend to belong to hotels and offer a good selection from traditional Austrian to pizzerias, Chinese and a "Ritter Kuche" (medieval restaurant). Reasonably priced mountain huts for lunch and those inevitable morale-boosting gluhweins.

Full day excursions tend to involve Innsbruck's shops and charming old town; Salzburg; across the German border for Bavarian castles.
