Palaiokastritsa is the name of the most famous picturesque village of the island of Corfu, 26 kilometres northwest of Corfu Town; the village offers many nice taverns overlooking the bay and six sandy and pebble beaches which are scattered all around the area; those beaches are surrounded by olive trees forests and are famous for their dramatic scenery and the beauty of their colours.

This is an upmarket resort best suited to families with older children. The terrain is quite hilly and so may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties.

The area has quality hotels and private villas, but with some middlemarket apartment blocks starting to spring up around the area.

There is a monastery, dating from 1228, on the promontory about a mile from the beach. A medieval castle, Angelokastro, overlooks the area, sited on a hilltop which can be reached by a very scenic drive via the village of Lakones, or on foot, though the walk is arduous.

The tourist infrastructure has intruded in many respects, but the timeless aspect of whitewashed buildings clustered on hillsides around narrow pebbled alleys has been retained. The myriad islands in the Aegean Sea are easily accessible from Piraeus, the historic harbour of Greece's mainland capital, Athens, by ferry or hydrofoil, offering a unique chance for 'island-hopping'. Many of the larger islands also have airports with connections to Athens or seasonally with major European cities.

In the S of the mainland, the capital Athens suffers from being overcrowded and polluted but nevertheless intrigues and delights visitors and is dominated by its major landmark, the Parthenon. In contrast, Thessaloniki in the N is vibrant and modern with a Byzantine flavour. The remains of Greece's past and wonders are mainly found on the Peloponnese Peninsula, S of Corinth.
