Overview Things to do Suitability Country Info (Sri Lanka)
A sizeable animated town, Kalutara is centred around a chaotic junction and extends from this point for several mls in both directions, the resort area encompassing the neighbouring hamlets of Kuduwaskaduwa, Mahawaskaduwa and Katukurunda.

The coast road itself is densely lined with modern businesses, a motley collection of shops and myriad stalls. The town boasts three striking and impressive religious buildings which dominate the skyline: a Buddhist temple, a Catholic church and a mosque. Formerly the island's centre for the spice trade, it is now known for its basketwork and is at the hub of Sri Lanka's growing wine industry.

This area is suitable for sun worshippers wanting tropical relaxation in sophisticated surroundings with the option of venturing into the life of the local community.

The accommodation here is almost exclusively sizeable self-contained all-inclusive resort-style complexes with their own entertainment programmes and activities.

    Locality:

Kalutara is on the south west coast, 28 mls S of Colombo, 52 mls S of Bandaranaike international airport. It is on a long flat coastal strip backed by countryside.
