Antwerp lies on the North Sea estuary of the River Scheldt , in the North of Belgium close to the border with the Netherlands. Antwerp is a hectic sprawl, brimming with different moods, tones and colours. This is reflected in the variety of its cuisine and the cosmopolitan nature of its inhabitants. Although it is proudly Flemish, almost everyone is equally at home speaking Dutch, French, German or English.
The modern port has now been moved north of the city, but you can still wander along the windswept wharf which dates back to the 16th century and then in a matter of minutes, find yourself sipping coffee in a cosy café in the wonderful Grote Markt, staring up at the Cathedral and wondering which of the city's wonderful restaurants you're going to visit. By night, the city also buzzes with cool bars and lounges featuring in-house DJs and electronic clubnights. Antwerpeners have always prided themselves on being true descendants of the notoriously gluttonous Duke of Burgundy and today the city is all the more gourmet with innovative fusion cuisine taking over from the traditional moules frites. |
