Overview Things to do Suitability Country Info (USA)
Kansas is a state in the Great Plains region and is generally considered the geographical centre of the USA known as "the Heart of America." Thanks to the Wizard of Oz, many non-Kansans (and some Kansans as well) think of it as a place from which to escape; however, there are a lot of great places to visit, particularly if you are interested in the history of the American West. With a little exploration, almost every little town has something of interest.

Today's cutesy, gingham-pinafore image of Kansas, associated with Little House on the Prairie and The Wizard of Oz , is a far cry indeed from the troubled history that made it known as "bleeding Kansas". The state was a violent battleground between pro- and anti-slavery settlers during the 1850s which played a pivotal role in America's westward expansion, its string of frontier forts supporting the clashes of the Indian Wars of the 1860s.

Kansas' attractions lie mainly in its wilderness and numerous state parks and wildlife refuges. The land is full of rolling hills and prairies, sand dunes, wildflowers, rivers and lakes. These terrains offer a wealth of attractions for boaters, hikers, hunters, horseback riders and fishermen who all enjoy nature's playground.
