Situated off the coast of China, Taiwan is bustling with huge urban developments, but also provides some breathtaking vistas behind the scenes. With the lush mountains of Wulai, pulsating cities like Taipei, the stunning basalt cliffs of Penghu , excellent hiking in Taroko Gorge, not to mention some of the world’s best hot springs, Taiwan is one of the most diverse destinations in Asia. Taiwan really is a world of contrasts with a blend of cultural flavours you’re not likely to find anywhere else on the planet.

First stop is usually a jet into the airport at the capital, Taipei, and not too far away are the islands below which greet you with majestic peaks, rolling hills and plains, basins and inlets, tropical beaches and green forests and grasslands.

At the base of the mountains are the cluster of crowded industrial cities and towns. This is where modern, high-rise buildings form a backdrop to numerous traditional folk festivals, and where ancient temples sit alongside glass-fronted chic boutiques in the bustling streets. The country is a picture of old and new matched against beautiful and ugly. Visitors will be enthralled as much by the bustling metropolis of Taipei as with the array of natural attractions throughout this relatively small island.

Tawain's variety of national parks provide thousands of species of wildlife many of which are home to rare and endangered species. Unique excursions include taking a train ride on the Alishan, one of only three mountain railways in the world, and hiking up NE Asia's highest mountain, Jade Mountain. With its volcanic origins, tropical climate and Polynesian flavour, Taiwan has often deservedly been dubbed the 'Hawaii of Asia'.
