The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is a landlocked country in the Benelux bordered by Belgium, France and Germany, lying at the crossroad of Germanic and Latin cultures. It is the only Grand Duchy in the world and is the second-smallest of the European Union member states.

With a successful steel, finance and high technology industry, a strategic location at the heart of Western Europe, more natural beauty than you might expect given its size, and as one of the top three richest countries in the world, Luxembourg enjoys a very high standard of living and has prices to match!

Dwarfed by its neighbours France, Germany and Belgium, Luxembourg barely gets a look in as a travel destination. If it is thought of at all, it is probably as a rather unexciting place full of important banking institutions and European Union politicians. Yet, there is more to this tiny country of just 51 miles (85km) long and 32 miles (52km) wide. Those that do try out this country for size find a fascinating land of quaint villages, medieval fortresses, rolling woodlands and sun-drenched castles.

Particular areas of interest include the Ardennes region which is hilly, densely forested and dotted with medieval castles, best known for being the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge. Alos popular is the Mullerthal area which is great for hiking with its curious sandstone rock formations among waterfalls and forest, the Moselle wine-growing region is picturesque and famed for its white wines, and Luxembourg City has grown up around an ancient fortified citadel in a setting that is unique and strangely beautiful. As if that were not enough to attract attention, bear in mind that the Grand Duchy also has more Michelin-starred restaurants per capita than any other country in the world and more than its fair share of eateries at a more modest budget.
