Located in the heart of Europe, Hungary is one of the best places to enter both Central and Eastern Europe. Whilst some of its neighbours have more dramatic landscapes and scenery, older and more important monuments, Hungary flourishes in things to see and do, and those with special interests - fishing, horse riding, botany, bird-watching, cycling, thermal spas, Jewish culture - will find Hungary a gem of a country.
Under the old communist regime, most of the government's focus and money went to the capital Budapest. Consequently, foreign visitors rarely explored beyond the city. Nowadays, the country serves up a variety of interesting and 'explore-worthy' towns and regions that are off the beaten track: the tanya világ (farm world) of the Southern Plain, ethnically rich NE Hungary, the Villány Hills in S Transdanubia covered in vineyards and the traditional Őrség region in the far W are all worth a visit for the discerning traveller. |
