Fiji, located in the South Pacific Ocean, is a Melanesian country. It lies about two-thirds of the way from Hawaii to New Zealand and consists of an archipelago that includes 332 islands, a handful of which make up most of the land area, and approximately 110 of which are inhabited.

Fiji straddles the 180 degree longitude line (which crosses land on a remote tip of Vanua Levu and again near the centre of Taveuni), so the international date line jogs east, placing Fiji all in one time zone and "ahead" of most of the rest of the world.

The offshore coral atolls of the Mamanuca Group are the gem in Fiji's tourism. Here there are lots of up-market beach resorts, water activities and day cruises. Backpackers head further north to the Yasawa Group where secluded beaches, locally run beach resorts and great snorkelling offer the ultimate chill out destination. Fiji provides for a truly exotic experience and it's no surprise that tourists come here by the jet load. More than 90 flights a week land at Nadi airport on the main island of Viti Levu. Most of which tend to enjoy exploring the various offshore island resorts or the other large islands of Vanua Levu or Taveuni. Viti Levu has a number of large towns and the bustling capital of Suva provides an upbeat nightlife and is a shopper's paradise.

The country is blessed with some of the finest scuba diving (notably soft corals) and surfing waves in the world. Specialist resorts and live aboards catering exclusively for these markets offer the ultimate adventure holiday. And Fiji's rich culture and traditional lifestyle, along with its friendly people, offer a great backdrop for exploring.
