Moldova is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, located between Romania to the W and Ukraine to the N, E and S. It declared itself an independent state with the same boundaries as the preceding Moldovan SSR in 1991, as part of the devolution of the Soviet Union. A strip of Moldova's internationally recognized territory on the east bank of the river Dniester is under de facto control of a breakaway government of Transnistria since 1990.

The country is a parliamentary democracy with a president as head of state and a prime minister as head of government. Moldova is a member state of the United Nations, Council of Europe, WTO, OSCE, GUAM, CIS, BSEC and other international organizations.

Despite remaining one of the poorest countries in Europe, the people are welcoming and friendly, and the main areas, such as the capital Chisinau, are rich in culture and have pretty much everything a visitor could need. Chisinau's cathedrals, monuments and museums survived severe WWII bombings to the city, including the famous house where Pushkin lived  his days in exile penning some of his most famous works.
