The British Virgin Islands (BVI) are a group of over 50 islands and Cays, located in the Leeward Islands, about 90 miles East of Puerto Rico and North East of the US Virgin Islands. The main island of Tortola is about 54 square miles, with Virgin Gorda about 8 square miles. Most of the islands are made up of rolling hills, although Anegada is completely flat rising to only a few feet above sea level.
The BVI is one of the premier locations in the world for sailing, with the constant trade winds, crystal clear waters and many small islands and bays to visit. Often referred to as 'Nature's Little Secrets', visitors to the British Virgin Islands will not be hard pressed to find out why. Abounding in natural beauty, the 36 islands making up the Caribbean archipelago (16 of which are uninhabited) have kept the affects of tourism at bay and offer unblemished beaches, numerous unspoilt anchorages, exotic fauna and flora and a low-key lifestyle. The largest of the BV islands is Tortola and is commonly regarded as the yachting capital of the Caribbean. Featuring beautiful tropical landscapes the island is an ideal base from which to explore some of the other islands. Besides the major islands, there are also lots of secluded islets and cays to experience. |
