Conil de la Frontera can accurately be described as a farming and fishing town. It has been a centre of tuna fishing since the Phoenicians were here and boasts continuous occupation by Carthaginians, Romans, Moors and several others.
With a population of only 18,000, it covers an area of about 1 ml by ½ ml including all the more modern areas. Set on fairly steeply sloping ground, there are several daunting hills to climb from the beachfront and river-bank areas. The tiny and originally walled old town is of most interest to tourists and is quaintly typical of the region with narrow streets winding through neatly whitewashed houses. The climate here is much more bearable than the searing heat of the Mediterranean Costas. It is comparable to that of the Algarve and the perpetual and sometimes quite strong Atlantic breezes keep temperatures in check. Conil is located on the S Atlantic coast of Andalucia, in the province of Cadiz (95 mls S of Seville and its airport, 38 mls S of Jerez and its airport, 27 mls S of the provincial capital of Cadiz, 11 mls SE of Chiclana and Novo Sancti Petri). It is situated at the mouth of the Salado river, on its NW bank with a wide beach extending S. Surrounded by low, rolling hills utilised as agricultural land. |
