Cavelossim is halfway down the west coast of India, in the south part of the state of Goa. (it is 10 mls S of Margao; 6¾ mls S of Colva. 32 mls SE of Dabolim airport). The village is ½ mile inland, set in fairly flat countryside with lots of rice paddies and open woodland, getting drier and less green farther to the S. The Sahydri Hills in the distance to the south provide an attractive backdrop.

This small, peaceful village (1¾ by 3¾ mls) has a large, appealing church (Santa Cruz), a few basic general stores, market stalls, some tiny, low-key bars and restaurants and little else. It is the last of the larger settlements in the Saclette area, with the River Sal to the S, which is a rich source of shellfish. Most of the hotels are spread along the narrow road to the S and W, fronting the beach.

This resort is suitable for quiet, low-key holidays in peaceful, lush surroundings where nightlife is low on the agenda. It suits couples seeking tranquillity. Some facilities at the larger hotels for children, but not really a family destination.

The accommodation here is the larger, well-equipped, tourist-orientated hotels towards the top end of the scale. There are a few smaller, sedate, family-run hotels to the south of the village.

Goa Cavelossim and Goa Varca beaches are situated side by side. Filled with white sands and dotted with black lava rocks at certain places, Goa Varca beach and Goa Cavelossim beach offer a heaven to the tourists. These beaches, being much cleaner and quieter than most of the famous beaches of Goa, manage to attract many tourists. There are numerous beach shacks offering a variety of Goan dishes and seafood at reasonable prices. There are several food joints around Dona Sylvia where you can get entire package of good food, good drink, nice service, and a pleasant service at quite reasonable rates.

The main attraction at Goa Varca beach and Goa Cavelossim beach is the facility available for dolphin watching. There are boat trips arranged for this special event. Tourists can book themselves and sail away into the sea to watch the dolphins and if you are lucky, you can even touch these dolphins from close quarters.

The shopping here is suitably limited. Roadside stalls selling local produce; small grocers and vendors. Many larger hotel have their own (rather expensive) shops. To the south of the village, however, is a congregation of tourist-type outlets selling handicrafts, carvings and clothes, with some larger, well-stocked shops.

During the daytime aside from the attractive beach, hotels offer various tours, sports facilities (including golf and tennis) and water sports. The narrow, flat, fairly quiet lanes should keep cyclists happy.

The nightlife here offers a few low-key bars, with the most options in the hotels. There is a variety of evening entertainment, including live music, dancing and karaoke at the hotels, mainly during high season (October-April). For more active nightlife, head for northern Goa.

For food there is a few more basic roadside eateries and beach shacks, all serving fresh seafood and local Goan and Indian dishes. Wider choice in larger hotels, including Goan, Indian and Continental, plus theme nights and barbeques.

In the central Indian states of Orissa and Madhya Pradesh tribal village life has resulted in a variety of artistically executed handicrafts.

India's mountains provide heli skiing, river running, mountaineering and trekking. Its beaches provide lazy sun-bathing as well as wind surfing and snorkeling, and its jungles provide shooting wildlife -with a camera.

Modern India is home alike to the tribal with his anachronistic lifestyle and to the sophisticated urban jetsetter. It is a land where temple elephants exist amicably with the microchip. Its ancient monuments are the backdrop for the world's largest democracy where atomic energy is generated and industrial development has brought the country within the world's top ten nations. Today, fishermen along the country's coastline fashion simple fishing boats in a centuries old tradition while, a few miles away. motor vehicles glide off conveyor belts in state-of-the-art factories.
