Overview:
Zahara de los Atunes is a small fishing village on the Costa de la Luz 30 km north of Tarifa on the Atlantic coast. The place is slightly over ½ ml long by ¼ ml wide, it is flat and walkable in very little time. The climate is much more bearable than the searing heat of the Mediterranean Costas and is comparable to that of the Algarve and the perpetual. The Atlantic breezes keep temperatures in check.
Locality:
Zahara de los Atunes is situated on the south Atlantic coast of Andalucia, in the province of Cadiz (120 mls south of Seville and its airport, 62 mls south of Jerez and its airport, 52 mls south of the provincial capital of Cadiz, 6 mls south east of Barbate). Zahara is backed by a steep, boulder-strewn hill (the south tip of the Sierra del Retin mountains) to the north. The surrounding countryside comprises low, rolling hills, either military land or devoted to agriculture and grazing for cattle including bulls for fighting.
Entertainment/Facilities/Attractions/Things to do:
The area is generally favoured by Spanish tourists from Madrid and the north of the country but only for the high season months of July and Aug. The rest of the summer season is dominated by Germans but the British are catching up slowly. Mainly couples and families seeking an escape from Spain's louder resorts are mosted to this destination. The area is also popular with serious walkers and nature lovers.
Tourists are also treated to 8 mls of wide, fine golden sand stretches from Barbate to a couple of miles past Zahara. At the resort there are plenty of amenities on the beach including sunbeds, parasols, showers, snack bars etc. Unusually for this coast, there are no steep steps down cliffs to negotiate and even the usual dunes are missing. Daytime activities in the area generally consist not a lot apart from relaxing or beach activities, as a stroll round the narrow streets will only occupy a couple of hours; the ruins of an old fortified palace and 16th-century church even less. By night holiday makers are mainly restricted to dinner out and a drink in one of the many bars and "pubs", some of which have live music; "chiringuitos" (shack-like restaurants on the beach) often have the liveliest entertainment with live music, flamenco shows etc.
