Overview:

Weymouth, a seaside town and favourite with leisure boats, it was originally a fishing village, and it grew in the 17th century before becoming a major seaside resort.

King George III spent his summers in the town , and the curves of the Georgian Esplanade looks out over Weymouth Bay and its safe, clean sandy beach.  The town played a key role in the D-Day invasion.

Weymouth as you would expect, has good fishing and boating trips and high speed ferries operate from Weymouth harbour from the Channel Islands and France.

Nearby you have Abbotsbury Swannery and Abbotsbury Garden, Portland Castle, Corfe Castle and Chesil Beach.

Just a few hundred metres from Weymouth's town centre, you'll find the Swannery and RSPB Nature Reserve and a host of indoor and outdoor attractions open all year. With the variety of places to visit and over 200 year-round events, there really is something to suit everyone. 

Another, more modern defensive structure is Nothe Fort, built on a headland jutting into Portland Harbour in 1860. It was in service until 1956, and has since been transformed into a living museum, tracing the history of the fort, and in particular the role of Weymouth in the Second World War.
