Located midway between New York and Florida, Virginia is the gateway to the South. It is also sometimes classified in the Mid-Atlantic region. The Commonwealth is bordered by Washington, D.C., the nation's capital, and Maryland to the north; the Atlantic Ocean to the east; North Carolina and Tennessee to the south; and West Virginia and Kentucky to the west.

Western Virginia is mountainous, covered by the Allegheny and Blue Ridge mountains with the great Shenandoah Valley falling between the ranges. The central piedmont region, with its rolling hills, flattens out into the sandy coastal plain toward the Atlantic Ocean.

Virginia's weather has been described as a "Goldilocks Climate" -- not too hot; not too cold -- and is officially considered a humid, subtropical region due to winter frost. During the summer, it can get a bit "sticky" due to the abundant water along the East Coast with the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean as well as the Potomac, Rappahannock, York, and James rivers and their tributaries. But the air is cooler with less humidity in the mountains, on the average of 10 degrees cooler all four seasons.

Nightlife in Virginia includes ballroom dancing, theater, concerts as well as line dancing, neighborhood pubs and karaoke. Since country music found its origins here, visitors can hear old timey mountain tunes every weekend. For specific events that might be happening while you're in town, please check the Events menu.

Be it in a museum, at an historic site or on a city street, Virginia's many different kinds of exhibits cover everything from art, culture and heritage to food, clothes and transportation.

Dining in Virginia is a real treat for travelers. Regional dishes like country ham and grits can be found on the same city block as ethnic dishes from the Old Country. Chose a chrome/neon diner and a malt, a family-style buffet of soul food or a country kitchen with crisp cotton curtains and fried chicken; all offer comfort food that mom used to make. Virginia also presents quality five-star restaurants famous for their unique menus, fabulous service and elegant settings.

Virginia is home to two world-renown theme parks - Busch Gardens Williamsburg and Paramount's King's Dominion - as well as other water parks and zoos. Make this your wildest vacation ever in Virginia!

From Aerospace to Zoology, Virginia presents hands-on exhibits, interactive learning stations and knowledgeable reenactors.
