A small, low-key former fishing village with a compact centre, comprising of a jumble of local-style buildings plus a few bars, restaurants and shops, all clustered around the marina.

With steep cliffs and pine covered hills reaching down to the Mediterranean, simple houses and open air restaurant lining the beautiful bay - Tamariu is a village visited by travellers year after year.

There are no high rise blocks, smaller complex and villas scattered around the hillside of Aigua Xelida and the beach. There accomodation is generally a few hotels, all budget to mid-price range. One campsite, and a few apartments.

Tamariu has a small selection of village shops, a diving centre and offers the possibility of renting a boat to explore the surrounding coastline.

The area is best suited to mature, independent, middlemarket holidaymakers. It is frequented by international visitors and lots of Spanish families at weekends. There are not a lot for children and way too quiet for teenagers.

The village of Tamariu is an excellent spot to use as a base to get to know the Costa Brava.

Found in NE Spain, on the Mediterranean coast, midway along the Costa Brava, Tamariu is 81 mls NE of Barcelona, 27 mls E of Gerona and 32 mls E of Gerona's airport. It is set on a rocky coastline, at the bottom of a steep, narrow, winding coast road and surrounded by pine-covered hills. Residential area of Aigua Xelida over the hill at one side.

Tamariu has a small selection of village shops, a diving centre and offers the possibility of renting a boat to explore the surrounding coastline.

During the daytime activities are mainly beach based, or walk the rocky coastal paths, maybe kayaking, captain your own boat with boat hire, and a popular diving centre. The nightlife is limited to beachfront bars and restaurants.

The main concentration of restaurants is along the beachfront promenade, mainly serving fish and Catalan dishes. There are 2 pizzerias and a few Ice-cream stands.

Take a Half day trip to the nearby picturesque medieval town of Pals, or the nearby small resorts of Llafranc and Calella de Palafrugell, but must include the Cap Roig Botanical Gardens and Castle, San Sebastian Mountain and lighthouse for stunning views. Take a full day trip to the amazing cities of Gerona and Barcelona.

Tamariu Beach is a sloping, 250-yd stretch of coarse golden sand with pebbles at the water's edge and a couple of rocky outcrops, numerous boats are pulled up onto the sand towards its centre. Adjoining is L'Iris Beach. Sunbeds and sun umbrellas for hire as well as kayaks and pedalloes. Numerous boats moor in the cove. Around the corner is Fonda Beach, a tiny stretch of pebbles bordered by large rocks. A car is needed to reach minuscule Aigua Xelida cove, backed by sheer cliffs and accessed by steep steps.
