Swansea is Wales's "City by the Sea" - the second-largest city in Wales is situated right on the broad sweep of sand that is Swansea Bay (the beach is within easy walking distance of the city centre). The bay is a centre for windsurfing . Once a large, industrial port, the city has been cleaned-up and is now making the most of its maritime heritage.
Swansea is the gateway to the Gower Peninsular. The Gower has some of the best beaches in Britain and would make an excellent holiday destination.
Probably the prettiest beach on Gower is Three Cliffs Bay (shown left). The view from the top was deservedly voted fourth best view in Britain . All approaches involve a fair bit of walking. This does ensure that the beach is always fairly empty. I'd recommend walking down the hill from Penmaen village.
Swansea Bay is many destinations rolled into one! The maritime City of Swansea, birthplace of Catherine Zeta Jones and Dylan Thomas, the Victorian seaside resort of Mumbles, the Gower Peninsula and the Waterfalls Country combine into a breathtaking mix of spectacular contrasts, all you need for a fabulous holiday!
Swansea is situated on the South West coast of Wales. A city perfectly situated on the edge of a five-mile bay, Swansea is a vibrant, multi-cultural destination.
Swansea's most famous son is the poet Dylan Thomas , and you can follow his life from his childhood in Swansea to his death in New York in the permanent exhibition at the Dylan Thomas Centre . There you will find unique archive material, original sound recordings (from famous works such as "Under Milk Wood"), and a "spelling wall" with magnetic words taken from Dylan's poems.
An amazingly compact space, Swansea has it all, beautiful parks and gardens, world class cultural facilities, spectator sports and lots of shopping! The city is home to Wales biggest indoor market where you can sample traditional Welsh delicacies, like cockles from Penclawdd caught fresh on the day you buy them!
The Maritime Quarter is a new development, using exhisitng historical buildings and turning them into modernised architectural spaces. The Marina houses luxury flats, hotels and shops and will shortly be the new home of the National Waterfront Museum, detailing Wales' industrial and maritime heritage.
From medieval castles to award-winning parks and gardens, the outdoors offer an almost unlimited variety of attractions within a few minutes drive of each other. Our vibrant cultural and entertainment scene will delight children and adults alike with colourful pantomimes, unique exhibitions and a fascinating insight into the area's natural and industrial heritage.
