The once County of Sussex can be located on the South Coast of England but is now divided into two separate counties, one being East Sussex and the other West Sussex. Bounded by the Counties of Hampshire, Kent and Surrey, 'Sussex' fronts the English Channel which seperates the United Kingdom from mainland Europe.
Lewes is the county town in East Sussex and Brighton, one of Englands most popular holiday resorts which has been regarded as a pleasure dome for centuries can also be found in East Sussex.
The county town of West Sussex is Chichester and is famed for its rich heritage of historic buildings and picturesque countryside. The nearby town of Rye has delightful winding cobbled streets and old timber framed buildings and is regarded by many as the prettiest town in England.
Hastings is an old fishing town and offers all the traditional amusements of the seaside, but retains much of the character from its colourful past. Rich in history, Hastings is famous worldwide for the 'Battle of Hastings' in 1066 between the invading Normans and the defending Saxons, the actual battle itself took place 6 miles inland from the town of Hastings, at a smaller town aptly named 'Battle' which is well worth a visit.
Call it what you will - Sussex means 80 miles of coastline and super beaches for the family, there are lovely gardens, history and heritage, castles, abbeys, priories, stately homes and historic houses.
There are family amusement parks and wildlife centres; the nostalgic, the curious and the simply fun, including museums of bygones, steam railways and caves. Sussex boasts numerous theatres and arts festivals, golf courses, horse racing, many ancient churches and buildings plus large Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty over the South Downs and Ashdown Forest, (including the soon-to-be-designated South Downs National Park) - and don't forget the Sussex Pub!
East Sussex is blessed with a rich rural heritage. Here you will find ideas on everything from walking and cycling to our coasts, parks and archaeological sites, including information about disabled access.
East Sussex has plenty of options, whatever your budget - from organic produce at local farmers' markets and gastro delights in nationally renowned restaurants to traditional cream teas in cottage tea rooms and locally brewed ales in cosy country pubs to.
Bodiam Castle rises from its own reflection in a lake-sized moat, where only swans, water lillys or the wind, break the surface. Bodiam is a fairytale castle in a superb location. The Castle was built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge, but could hardly be considered a serious fortification.
Bateman's is a Jacobean style house built in 1634 by a local builder. It features mullioned windows, gables with finials, a three storey porch and the fashionable decorative chimneys of the time.
