In the South-East of England lies the County of Surrey. Although, due to boundary changes much of Northern Surrey has now been dissolved into Greater London. In the county town of Guildford you can explore its wealth of interesting history and admire its sheer beauty.
Surrey really is a county for everyone, with so much to see and do. Local attractions include, Guildford Cathedral set in 20 acres of green parkland, Guildford Castle, which dates back to 1066 and Loseley Park, an outstanding example of Elizabethan architecture built by Sir William More in 1562.
Since 1780 the market town of Epsom has held the annual and worldwide famous 'Epsom Derby' horse race which continues to attract many visitors from far and wide.
The Surrey Cycleway offers one of the best ways of exploring the unexpected beauty of this county. The best-known landscape feature is probably the North Downs - a rolling swathe of hills formed from chalk.
Surrey has long been important to English Kings and before the Norman invasion Anglo-Saxon Kings were crowned at Kingston-upon-Thames.
A little further down the river King John signed the Magna Carta at Runnymede (a memorial is now erected there) and at Hampton Court Palace Henry VIII used the Thames to his full advantage.
Although Surrey is small and has 'lost' lots of territory to London, it still retains much unspoilt countryside and a true rural feel.
