St Gilgen is picture-postcard Austria: a relaxed village, measuring only around 1 ml long by ¾ ml wide, where the pace of life slows down to a dawdle. The area offers a good base for walkers, hikers and sightseers. The area is not really classified as a ski-resort although skiing is a popular option. St Gilgen suits families and couples wanting simplicity, not for those seeking lively diversions.

The accomodation varies from traditional chalet-style pensions to upmarket hotels. The hotels are mainly 3-star establishments.

Mozart's mother was born here and the village has a definite historic atmosphere. Activity tends to meander around the main central square.

Shopping here is limited, what there is, is mainly Lederhosen, schnapps and Mozart chocolates. Shopping fanatics should head for Salzburg.

St Gilgen is situated in W-central Austria (9 mls NW of St Wolfgang, 6 mls SE of Fuschl, 20 mls E of Salzburg, 27 mls E of Salzburg airport, 126 mls SE of Munich and its airport). St Gilgen is positioned at the NW end of a lake (Wolfgangsee) on mainly flat land rising up to main road, with pine-clad mountains forming a backdrop.

Most restaurants are hotel based, offering range from Italian and Chinese to authentic Austrian. There are a few pleasant traditional cafes offering snack or just a cup of coffee.

There are local excursions, half day trips can be taken to Berchtesgaden, Bad Ischl. For a fuller day visit Salzburg, take the Five Lakes Tour, the Grossglockner high alpine pass, or the wonderful city of Vienna (long day).
