The busy resort of Skala (Kefalonia) is perpetually growing; you will find everything you need for a fabulous holiday. The beach is excellent long and sandy with plenty of sun beds, umbrellas, water sports, scuba diving, with pools and bars nearby for quick refreshments.

The original fishing village of Skala was situated 1 ml inland but, after the 1953 earthquake, it was rebuilt on the coast, placing it in the ideal position for its latter-day reincarnation as a lively tourist resort.

The resort's main attraction is its long, fine shingle and sand beach, supplemented by some isolated coves in the surrounding area. 100 yds from the beach is a small high street, with narrower streets branching off, and it is here that most of the resort action, shops, bars and restaurants reside.

This resort attracts middlemarket families and couples of all ages, but particularly the younger, more informal crowd, it also attracts beach, water-sports and nature lovers.

There are a number of historical sites in the area and, along the coast to the SW, the conservation area of Potamakia Beach is a haven for rare loggerhead turtles.

Of historical interest there are well-preserved Roman mosaics at the 'Roman villa' sign posts for which can be found all over Skala. Many of the popular excursions around the island start from Skala, such as the island tour and Ithaki are well worth looking at.

Sun beds are expensive to rent, the nearest Bank is in the next resort of Poros. Because it is a tourist resort it doesn't have the charm and character of a less touristy area. That isn't to say it hasn't a character of its own though - far from it!

Skala is located on the SE coast, 30 mls SE of Argostoli, 20 mls SE of the airport. It is positioned on low-lying land, flanked by rugged, stony, pine-clad hills.

During the daytime beach life and water sports are favourite. You can go on organised night-time "turtle watches", trips to historic sites, including Roman ruins with lovely mosaics and, 1 ml out of town, a 7th-century-BC temple of Apollo.

There are a round 3 mls of sand and shingle, with large white pebbles scattered around, this gently shelving into the sea, there are plenty of sun umbrellas and sunbeds for hire as well, but these could be considered expensive. The beaches also have good water-sports facilities in high season.

Evenings offer a good choice of bars and tavernas, including music bars and late-night options, Greek evenings, there is also an open-air nightclub outside town, on road to Poros.

There is a big choice of tavernas and cafes offering the usual fare, a mixture of Greek/Anglo cuisine, pasta, pizza, British breakfasts and fish.
