In Sirmione you will find an old-fashioned type of service and luxury. The tranquillity, romance of the area add to the whole experience. There is not much to do if you are the the culture vulture but the scenery is idealic. The S end of the peninsula nearest the "mainland" is flat cultivated land with the occasional ancient village enriched by orchards, olive groves and vineyards. Farther along is a residential area with hotels and small apartment blocks, never more than 4 storeys high and served by orderly roads allowing free circulation of traffic

The accommodation is fantastic with well-tended hotels which offer an experience of space and relaxing comfort more than the modernised gadget palaces of today. Many of the gardens around the area will leave you outstounded and completely in awe.

The beaches are narrow and few and far between. Yet the peninsula caters more for boats to come and go, providing numerous landing stages, many of them belonging to hotels. An area visited by many of the rich and famous.

Locality:

Sirmione is located at the S end of Lake Garda (80 mls E of Milan, 93 mls W of Venice airport, 22 mls W of Verona). The area is predominantly low-lying, narrow, mostly a few hundred yards wide. Beautiful views across the water to the E and W shores, with mountains behind.

Entertainment/Facilities/Attractions/Things to do:

The castle and the old town with its narrow streets and small piazzas, arched stone doorways, boutiques, galleries, cafes, restaurants and gelaterias are popular with day-trippers arriving and departing on regular ferries. A couple of old churches with frescoes help to keep the balance between the commercialism and the natural beauty of the resort.

During sunlight the water sports prove a popular activity. Equally popular is visiting the olive and wine museums and the odd game of Tennis. There is a Golf course about 9 miles away. Regular ferries do trips to other resorts on the lake, all serving drink and some even food.

In the evening you are limited to a couple of dancing places and you may find piano bars in some hotels.

There are plenty of small restaurants and pizzerias in interesting settings. Excellent lake fish is served along with truffles, a selection of local cheese and honey.

Take a tour of the lake by coach with short boat trip included.

Visit fantastic Italian cities like Verona and Venice, or maybe The Dolomites, Florence or Milan which are just an excursion away!
