This sprawling, built-up, charmless resort, which lacks any real Spanish character, is saved only by its vast main beach. A wide, exposed arc of fine sand, backed by a promenade, stretches for 1¾ mls. It has 4 separate sections: the central section (known as Playa de San Antonio) has 2 distinct shallow areas protected by 3 large breakwaters.
The area looks like a smaller version of Benidorm, with numerous aesthetically challenged, 1950s-style apartment blocks, bars and restaurants lining the beachfront promenade. However teenagers and young groups are better off in neighbouring Playa de Aro, as it is not like Benidorm at night. The resort has a mixture of ature, independent car-drivers and couples renting apartments and families with young children.
Accommodation generally consists of lots of private apartments rented out through agencies and a small selection of rather basic 2- and 3-star hotels. However campers and caravanners of all ages are well catered for.
San Antonio De Calonge is located in NE Spain, on the Mediterranean coast, almost midway along the Costa Brava. It is 72 mls NE of Barcelona and 25 mls SE of Gerona and its airport. On a long, exposed bay between the fishing port of Palamos to the NE and a rocky headland to the SW, which separates the resort from Playa de Aro. On mainly flat land, with some pine-clad hills and Les Gavarres Mountains behind.
In the daytime beaches and associated activities are the main attraction. The Aquadiver water park in Playa de Arois is a more energetic option. Coastal walks to Playa de Aro prove popular and a small selection of shops selling souvenirs, beach accessories and the usual daily essentials pass the time for tourists. Banks and cashpoints are all available. By night activities are limited to bars and restaurants along the beachfront promenade, Medieval night. Lots happening in neighbouring Playa de Aro.
Standard offering of informal eateries, fast food, fish restaurants, pizzerias and paella but nothing overly memorable, a few ice-cream places.
Local excursions include half day trips to small nearby resorts of Calella de Palafrugell (with Cap Roig Botanical Gardens), Llafranc and Tamariu (by car), or by boat to Playa de Aro and San Feliu de Guixols.
Full day excursions are visits to Gerona and Barcelona; boats to Tossa de Mar and Lloret de Mar.
