Puerto Rico, one of Gran Canaria's most popular family resorts situated at the mouth of a large valley was once a small fishing port, the Puerto Rico of today is swamped with hotels and apartments, built on the terraces of the steep slopes rising from the coastline, fortunately brightened up with lush greenery to please the eye.

Bustling and overcrowded during high season, Puerto Rico can be very nice and quiet in low season. It has a small but beautiful beach, covered with sand from the Sahara, where space is rare and sun beds are even lined up on a jetty. Set back from the beach, in a lush tropical garden with exotic plants and flowers you will find two public swimming pool lidos. Renowned to be the sunniest spot of the island, this holiday resort is a true paradise for sun worshippers.

Puerto Rico is also known for the many water sports activities, ranging from jet-skiing, sailing, diving, big game fishing and windsurfing to leisure excursions such as pleasure boat trips along the coast, dolphin watching cruises or a trip in a glass bottom boat to discover the world under the water surface.

Other 'off-beach' attractions include golf courses, a water park featuring all kinds of entertainment for young and old and an attractive shopping centre nearby.

Puerto Rico also boasts a nice harbour and it is renowned as a sailing centre, members of its clubs having already achieved five Olympic medals. Deep-sea fishing is also at its greatest here, proof of which are more than fifty world records claimed by fishermen setting out from this port.

Puerto Rico is located on the South West coast, 45 mls SW of Las Palmas (10 mls W of Playa del Ingles. 28 mls SW of airport). It is situated into a steep cleft between barren cliffs.

If you are looking for an active holiday there are plenty of places for you to visit and things to do in and surrounding Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria! Including the Water parks, of which there are three located in the south of the island, although just one in Puerto Rico, Aqua Park.

Although there isn't any theme or amusement parks in Puerto Rico there are lots close by in the Souht of the island including; Palmitos Park which is a subtropical oasis and Zoo, Holiday World which is a leisure and amusement park and Mundo Aborigen Located overlooking the Barranco de Fataga, which is the biggest and most dramatic gorge on the island, The Mundo Aborigen is a reconstruction of an ancient Canary village devoted entirely to the Guanche way of life.

Other Tourist Attractions in Puerto Rico resort include the water sports including; Deep Sea Fishing - which is some of the best in the world proven by the some 50 world records which have been held from fishermen leaving the port! Sailing, Surfing, Body Boarding and windsurfing, and also Whale, Dolphin and glass bottom boat excursions like many of the other Resorts in Gran Canaria!

Or maybe you prefer just a relaxing beach holiday and using the facilities and some of the activities that are provided along the beach, The busy resort of Puerto Rico has one of Gran Canaria's more favoured beaches with tourists of all kinds, particularly though with British Families, although it can be overcrowded during high season, it can be lovely and quiet in low season.

Golf is another tourist attraction, and the all year round weather of Gran Canaria brings golfers here. Although it is not only the weather but the prestigious international golf course designers that have designed the six exceptional courses here, and another four on the way! Also the price - it is value for money with green fares from as low as €50! There are three courses close to Puerto Rico, although with the island being small it allows you to be able to try them all!!!

But when visiting Puerto Rico, you should really go exploring the rest of Gran Canarias island you will see many spectacular views and scenery, in the mountains, forests, coastal and spectacular beaches or sand dunes! These are all easily accessible from Puerto Rico, whether you hire a car and explore in your own private group or perhaps take an excursion, which you can organise through a tour operator or it is easy to find a company that does this in the centre of the resort.
