Situated towards the south of Lanzarote, Puerto del Carmen is by far the liveliest resort on the island. Puerto del Carmen started life as a fishing village and its picturesque harbour at the southern end of the resort is still very much in action. It is a lovely place to unwind over a drink and watch the fishing boats come and go, and if you wander into the square nearby you'll see the locals playing boules. When you feel more energetic, there is plenty to do here.

Puerto del Carmen offers 5km of broad, pale sandy beaches as well as a wide variety of places to eat and drink and it remains a popular destination for holidaymakers from far and wide. Made up of a 'new' and 'old' town, Puerto del Carmen has no high-rise structures and almost all buildings are white and unpretentious.

Island Watersports offers tours and instruction in snorkelling and scuba-diving, or you can go riding courtesy of the Rancho Texas riding stables in Puerto del Carmen itself or Lanzarote a Caballo at Yaiza.

You can admire the underwater world from a submarine or a glass-bottomed boat or try your hand at deep-sea fishing - who knows, you might be lucky and catch the coveted marlin, or even a shark! There are also numerous excursions to attractions further afield.

The pulsating tourist centre of the Island - with two merging areas is the original downtown area of La Tiñosa which unfolds around the old fishermens port and its very special atmosphere; and the new part which has been developing along the 6 -7 km long sandy beach and promenade Avenida de las Playas over the last thirty years or so.

Puerto del Carmen is the ideal holiday resort for the sun worshipper who only wants to rest on the beach, as for the early bird who loves to take walks at sunrise, and also for the night owl who cares for dancing and entertainment.

A wide selection of shops and shopping centres, entertainment halls, restaurants and bars offers all sorts of possibilities for good buys and leisure activities, both during the day and at night. People of all nationalities and age-groups can be met here.

Puerto Del Carmen is on the south east coast of the island (18 mls NE of Playa Blanca, 9 mls SW of Arrecife, 6 mls SW of the airport Part of an almost continuous line of development linking Los Pocillos and Matagorda). Puerto Del Carmen is located on a broad beach, stretching along the coast against a backdrop of dry hills; distinctly hilly in parts.

There are Commercial centres, spaced along the main road parallel with the coast, meet most day-to-day needs. There is at least 2 mls of continuous shops and restaurants. The Local linen and cotton tablecloths and ceramics are particularly good.

During the daytime popular activities include tennis, squash, water sports (especially windsurfing), deep-sea fishing, mountain biking. Various scuba-diving schools. Horse riding can be found just outside town.

The nightlife here offers discos, live music bars and cocktail bars. Puerto del Carmen is the undisputed holder of the "liveliest resort" title.

Some of the more tempting restaurants and tapas bars are found in the old fishing port, but there are numerous alternatives spread throughout. They include fast food and international cuisine as well as local fare. The choice here is the widest on the island.

However, during the high season from September to April nightlife can't be compared with that of Playa del Inglés on Gran Canaria or of Ibiza, since especially the older generations of northern Europe turn their backs on the cold climate of the winter months, hibernating on Lanzarote.
