Praia da Luz, a half-mile-long sandy beach, is located directly before Luz, approx 2 mls west of Lagos. The sheltered beach is well suited for children and is enclosed by a large, dark rock massif on the one side, and a small villa community on the other. Various water sports activities, for example diving, also attract visitors.

Measuring roughly ¾ ml by ½ ml, this is a typical Portuguese fishing village with steep, cobbled streets and a predominantly peaceful, low-key atmosphere, although the main access road can get quite busy.

Tourism has been promoted with care, blending the new with the old and allowing the resort to retain much of its original character. Even the more recent developments expanding outwards to the west of the resort and comprising mainly villas and low-rise apartment blocks are designed in sympathy with their surroundgs.

This area attract a wide range of singles, couples, families with young children, nature lovers, golfers and water-sports enthusiasts. It is generally caters for a a mid- to upmarket.

The accommodation here is predominantly self catering, mainly upmarket villas. There are a couple of 4-star hotels in the vicinity.

Praia Da Luz is towards the west end of the Algarve coast, (8 mls W of Portimao, 2 mls W of Lagos. 60 mls W of Faro and the international airport). Rising out of small bay, and surrounded by cliffs with most roads running steeply down to beach.

The beach here is a large, wide, sandy, curved bay partly backed by cliffs and road. The easy access makes it very crowded in summer. The water is host to some dangerous currents but there is always a lifeguard on duty. Water-sports centres and beach snack bar. There are also some pleasant clifftop walks.

There is one commercial centre selling mainly souvenirs such as hand-crocheted items, lpace and pottery. Lagos market is on the first Saturday of each month.

During the daytime activities include water sports and walks. The 16th-century church is the dominating historic monument of the town. There is also the Parque da Floresta golf club and horse riding in Burgau.

The nightlife here offers 2 discos and plenty of bars, there is also a cinema showing films in original language.

There is a varied selection of places to eat at, including Italian, Indian, traditional Portuguese, British and several snack bars.
