Palm Springs and its neighboring communities all lie along interstate route I-10 and its parallel thoroughfare known as California Highway 111 or alternately known as Palm Canyon Drive. Palm Springs Airport is situated very near to downtown Palm Springs with the communities of Desert Hot Springs, Cathedral City, Ranch Mirage, Palm Desert, Indio, La Quinta and Coachella spread out along the flat desert valley to the north and south. All of the communities are beautiful and each features an assortment of accommodations, shopping, restaurants and golf courses. Spend your days shopping and dining at an extensive list of fine shops and restaurants. In downtown Palm Springs on the city's main drag - Palm Canyon Drive - parades and festivals are staged, and every Thursday night it is closed to traffic for a delightful Street Fair featuring food, crafts and entertainment. This famous strip is lined with antique shops, art galleries, boutiques, restaurants, nightclubs as well as their own "Walk of Stars". In January, the Palm Springs International Film Festival, for over 10 years, draws thousands to its more than 100 screenings of the best of international films. This resort has a strong emphasis on golf and tennis, but a wide choice of other outdoor activities. The fairly sedate nightlife may not suit younger, livelier groups. It is popular with mature holidaymakers, it's never cold and there are no steps. There is also a well-established gay community.
The accommodation here ranges from huge upmarket hotels loaded with facilities (golf, tennis, health spas, dining, shopping etc) to historic inns with just a few rooms. Family-orientated and budget chains are also well represented. More than 40 hotels geared specifically to the gay traveller.
Palm Springs is towards the west coast of the United States, in the South part of California State, nearly 100 mls inland from the Pacific Ocean (130 mls N of San Diego; 117 mls E of Los Angeles and its airport, 3 mls from Palm Springs International Airport). It is In S California's upper Colorado Desert, on the west edge of the Coachella Valley.
The main shopping in downtown Palm Springs is centred on the Mercado Plaza, this is mostly middle-of-the-range holiday wear and tasteful gift shops. Uptown has the galleries and antiques. There is an arts and crafts market in downtown Palm Springs on Thurs evenings. More distant are the exclusive El Paseo Ave (13 mls) and the designer-led Desert Hill premium outlets in Cabazon (25 mls).
During the daytime popular activities include golf, tennis, cycling, and hiking. There is also health spas, horse riding, mule rides, hot-air ballooning, sailplanes and trout fishing.
Also visit the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum. Living Desert Wildlife and Botanical Park. Moorten's Botanical Gardens. Palm Springs Air Museum . Village Green Heritage Museum. Knotts' Soak City Water Park . Adventure centre with rock-climbing walls. Palm Springs Desert Museum. There are also film festivals and golf tournaments a-plenty.
The nightlife here has several theatres, including the McCallum Theatre (aka The Bob Hope Cultural Center), which often features Broadway road shows and classical-music concerts; the Annenberg Theatre; and the Fabulous Palm Springs Follies (all chorus girls over 50). Cinema, Imax Theatre. Various nightclubs and coffee houses. Casino.
Restaurants here vary from formal to casual, poolside or surrounded by lavish decor. There is a wide range of ethnic cuisines, from Indian, French, Mexican and Italian to seafood and California-style bistros. Most major fast-food chains are represented (but not obtrusive), as are juice bars and stylish coffee shops. The prices vary from moderate to very expensive. All public establishments are nonsmoking.
