Ortakent is a small beach resort established in the 1970s and still being developed. Not to be confused with the working town of Ortakent some 3 mls inland which is not at all touristy. The main focus is a long string of small beachfront hotels connected by a couple of roads and dirt tracks.

It is a quiet and unsophisticated resort much better than Bodrum or Gumbet for those who want to get away from it all, as there is no busy commercial district and few discos. It is suitable for young families, and is popular with Turkish holidaymakers.

There are a large number of hotels, mainly on the beach, these are of varying standards, both old and new, but none in the highest grade. But there are some apartments too.

Ortakent is on the south west coast of Turkey, at the point where the Aegean Sea meets the Mediterranean Sea, near the southern tip of the Bodrum peninsula (8 mls W of Bodrum itself. Airports: Bodrum 38 mls NE, Dalaman 138 mls SE, Izmir 188 mls N). It is on a broad south facing bay with indented peninsulas and an island. The surrounding, sparsely populated countryside has citrus groves and is backed by hills.

There is a long stretch of earth-coloured sand containing many pebbles, which workers manfully try to sieve out in vain. There is clean sea water which is suitable for swimming.

The shopping here is all on the seafront; some minimarkets selling basic provisions, beachwear, sun tan cream etc.

Daytime offers mainly beach-based activities.

The nightlife offers a mixture of bars and restaurants.

The restaurants apart from those in the hotels, are virtually all on the beach and are generally quite basic.
