Overview:

Obertauern is a very friendly resort and even though it is mostly a purpose-built village, Obertauern doesn't remind you of the French 1960s concrete monstrosities.

It's at high altitude (1740m) and often provides excellent snow, so queues can build up when lower resorts have limited snow cover. There are 120km of pistes, but only a 600m vertical drop. As a result, there isn't a great variety of terrain for experts and better intermediates, but beginners and lower intermediates will flourish.

Added to that are a great ski school, decent lift links to the skiing on both sides of the town and good slope maintenance - this is an excellent place to learn and improve. There's also scope for plenty of off-piste, so better skiers and boarders aren't completely neglected.

This resort caters for the middle- to upmarket. It is a popular destination on the German market. For keen skiers of all levels, from beginners to advanced. Children are well looked after, with plenty of facilities. Although Obertauern is trying to encourage summer guests, many hotels are open only in the ski-season (Nov to early May), a fact reflected in their prices, making it more expensive than similar resorts.

There are a few older hotels, but a big increase in new, rebuilt, expanded or modernised properties. A wide variety of accommodation from small, homely B&Bs, traditional guesthouses, self-catering apartments and good, smaller middlemarket hotels to a large and increasing number of 4-star hotels.

Locality:

Obertauern is in west central Austria, 62 mls south east of Salzburg and its airport. It is found in In N- and S-facing position on the Tauern Pass, flanked on either side by the impressive Tauern Mountains.

Entertainment/Facilities/Attractions/Things to do:

There are five ski-schools and a superior children's ski-school. All of them offer snowboarding instruction. As the ski-schools meet in different places, you are never far away from one.

There is supermarkets, bakers, boutiques, photo shops, pharmacies, souvenirs and sports shops with a good choice of sports/outdoor gear and hire equipment. Some upmarket boutiques selling designer items, including clothing and cosmetics, at designer prices.

During the daytime it is predominantly ski-related activities plus sleigh rides, sledging and winter walks. Other activities include an indoor swimming complex, a sports centre with tennis, squash and bowling alley.

The nightlife offers lively apres-ski which starts in bars and cafes and continues after dinner in plentiful bars and restaurants. There are many hotels offer evening entertainment of various kinds during the main season (Nov to early May), including live music.

There is a huge choice of ski-huts and eateries on the slopes during the day. In the resort itself, there is a good choice of cafes, traditional guesthouse food, restaurants and hotel a la carte restaurants.
