Overview:

Niederau presents a great resort for first- and second-timers, a good ski school, good nursery slopes and great Austrian après-ski which is ideal for families, with a highly regarded ski school and a lack of resort traffic. For other skiers, particularly experts, there isn't a great selection.

The season is quite short due to a poor snow record, which can undermine the runs back to the resort and leave a limited amount of skiing. For boarders, the nearest park and half-pipe are found in Auffach. You can buy the 'Kitzbuheler Alpen' pass for nearly 700km of runs but, as another visitor commented, 'the après-ski and general atmosphere make up for any lack of snow'.

Niederau is a good, unsophisticated resort, very suitable for families, with lots of children's facilities. It is popular with young to middle-aged skiers, predominantly from Britain, Germany and the Netherlands. It is suited to beginner and intermediate levels, the advanced-level skiers can take advantage of the Auffach area, quickly reached by ski-bus.

There is a large variety of accommodation, from humble B&Bs to 4-star hotels. There are some self-catering apartments outside the town centre.

Locality:

Niederau is in NE Tyrol, 55 mls SW of Salzburg and its airport, 65 mls NE of Innsbruck and its airport, 65 mls SE of Munich (Germany) and its airport. It is set in a sunny, open position in the Wildschonau Valley, between the "Wild Emperor" Mountains and the Kitzbuheler Alps. It is the first and largest of 4 villages in the valley.

Entertainment/Facilities/Attractions/Things to do:

There are several ski-schools, with a large number of English-speaking instructors. The nursery slopes lie virtually behind village centre.

There is a limited choice for the shoppers, which is comprised of supermarkets, a sports shop, shoe shop and a handful of souvenir shops. Nearest shopping centre is in Worgl, 4 miles away.

During the daytime the winter activities include sleigh rides, winter walking, tobogganing, ice-skating and cross-country skiing. There are facilities for horse riding, paragliding and swimming. There is an art gallery and museum.

The nightlife here consists of bowling, sleigh rides, ahandful of unsophisticated bars and discos and night skiing.

For food all options are based in the hotels, which offer a good selection of a la carte menus and local cuisine, from very reasonably priced to expensive.
