Overview:

Negril lies at Jamaica`s far western tip and fun lovers are advised to make the trip. And they do, to see a beach that stretches for mile upon mile, watched over by cliffs and sunsets that get more applause than the reggae groups at Negril's discos.

Clothed or unclothed, visitors are drawn to Negril white Seven Mile Beach and some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving in Jamaica. Opening onto a tranquil lagoon protected by a coral reef, the beach here is set against a backdrop of sea grapes and coconut palms. The low-rise resorts blend gracefully into the flat, sandy landscape.

There are really two Negrils. The West End is the site of modest cottages and character-filled local restaurants. The other Negril is on the East End, along the road from Montego Bay; the best hotels line this panoramic beachfront. The town center itself offers little of interest.

Negril has always been most popular with freewheeling younger tourists although it has now become a "package" destination, it is something of an artists' colony and tends to attract hippy types and local Rastafarians. The addition of more upmarket properties and all-inclusive hotels has also led to an increase in more affluent visitors. Overall, it is still a mecca for the younger music enthusiast, the artist and those who enjoy sea, sun and parties.

There is a reasonable range from large, lively properties, often offering all-inclusive packages, and smaller, more intimate options. A fair number are adults only. Predominantly situated along the coast road; some hotels are right on the beach, others are set back inland in the low hills. No buildings in the area are allowed to be higher than the palm trees.

Locality:

Negril is at the west tip of Jamaica, 52 mls SW of Montego Bay and the international airport and 153 mls NW of Kingston. It is situated along a 7-ml stretch of white sand beaches, continuing south to West End (Negril Point), where the coastline is rocky with some towering cliffs. Most hotels are on the seaward side of the main road.

Entertainment/Facilities/Attractions/Things to do:

There is one long beautiful 7-ml stretch of beach. It offers good swimming with the water fairly shallow near the shore. The excellent water clarity makes this resort a haven for divers and snorkellers, particularly by the coral reef.

Most hotels have tourist shops and small boutiques and there are roadside stalls and craft stands which sell souvenirs. Some shopping in the village-centre shops and shopping plaza. The serious tourist shopper will need to travel to Montego Bay for variety and choice.

During the daytime activities are predominantly swimming and water sports, including windsurfing, water-skiing, sailing, snorkelling, scuba diving and parasailing. The snorkelling and diving are best off the cliffs at West End and there are several diving schools with full instruction courses and equipment. There are glass-bottomed boat tours, Horse riding, Golf, Tennis and squash at a few of the larger hotels.

The nightlife here has plenty of music bars and some discos, for those of a quieter bent, watching the sun set over the clifftops at West End.

There is plenty of variety in both cost and setting with most guests "dining around" at different properties. Jamaican foods and dishes abound in both restaurants and tiny food stalls on the roadside but you can also find French, Italian, Chinese and American options. Seafood is easily available.
