This area suits tropical beach lovers and water-sports enthusiasts and is also popular for weddings vacations. Although there are some good reasons for that, that also means that the locals here are well-trained in milking the dollars and pounds out of you.

Apart from the fishermen, there is off course the sea. The beach is great, though the water can be pretty rough.

Then there's also the canal system, mainly dug by the Dutch (and before them by the local Singalese). The Portuguese have been here too, there still are quite some catholics and two nice churches in town.

This town can be a good starting point for a tour through the country, although I would only recommend that for experienced travellers. Alternatively, you can come here after a tour for a couple af days rest before taking the airplane (the airport is a mere 200 roepies away by tuk-tuk).

The accommodation here is a range of budget hotels with gardens and pools to above-average, they are all self-contained, beach-orientated properties.

Negombo is found on the west coast. (27 mls N of Colombo, 5 mls NW of Bandaranaike international airport. 5 mls S of Waikkal). It is found In tropical coastal countryside, between busy main road and extensive sandy coastline.

The beaches here are long, well-developed stretches of broad golden sand, each hotelier cleans the beach outside their property frequently. Particularly noted for water sports during peak season, the ocean is often rough during summer the months.

The village centre has array of local businesses but little for the tourist. Kochchikade Sunday market, four miles away, is at the very least an experience. Numerous beach hawkers offer spices, textiles, handicrafts and leather goods.

The entertainment here is mostly hotel based but a couple of bars towards N of resort offer sports on TV and occasional live music.

There are a couple of quality restaurants at N end of tourist stretch offering mainly fish, lobster and curry dishes. There are a few German, Swiss and Dutch eateries on main road.
