The biggest ski resort in Eastern Canada, Mont Tremblant is found in the largely French-speaking Laurentian mountains of Quebec. This adds a slightly different flavour to that of the Rockies resorts, but there is the usual North American efficiency. The amount of recent investment has revolutionised Tremblant both in the resort, which is traditional in style, and on the snow.
Try the 'Dynamite' and 'Expo' pistes. They're well worth it. Snowboarders are spoilt, with a natural halfpipe and a specialist park to whet their appetites. The snow record is dependable and there are wide-ranging snowmaking facilities. It can, however, be very cold in winter and because the ski domain isn't that big, there can be lengthy queues and busy pistes. The area is suited to Middlemarket couples and families seeking virtual doorstep skiing coupled with attractive modern accommodation and leisure facilities. The summer brings in a sports-minded crowd, mainly golfers and hikers. The colourful autumn foliage attracts coachloads of Japanese sightseers.
The accommodation here is mainly middlemarket self-catering condominiums, with virtually all units privately owned and leased back to the controlling resort management company. There are some apartments, B&Bs and a few full-service hotels. Most accommodation is concentrated in the modern, purpose-built, pedestrianised Mont-Tremblant Resort.
Overall, Mont Tremblant is a slightly different North American ski experience with the French touch. The skiing is pretty good if a little limited in size, while it can be very cold early season. It is closer to Europe, though, and one of the highest-rated resorts in Eastern North America.
Mont Tremblant can be found in south east Canada, in the southern part of Quebec province (100 mls NE of Canada's capital Ottawa, 80 mls NW of Montreal and Dorval international airport). It is situated in the heart of the Laurentian mountain range. Mont-Tremblant Resort occupies sloping ground at the head of a broad valley, between the foot of Mount Grand Manitou's West -facing, tree-clad slopes and the south east shore of long, narrow Lac Tremblant.
There are many ski-schools, which meet close to the base area, with another location at the bottom of the resort. Kindergarten and children's club activities.
There is a fairly good choice of sports-orientated retailers selling clothing, skis and rugged footwear; a handful of designer fashion stores and jewellers. A few upmarket arts and crafts shops and a little art gallery. Self caterers are served by a small off-licence and a couple of minuscule grocery stores in traffic-free Mont-Tremblant Resort, with a larger minimarket in nearby Mont-Tremblant Village.
During the daytime the winter activities include varied downhill skiing and snowboarding, extensive cross-country trails, snowmobiles and ice-skating, There is a ultramodern leisure centre with gym, indoor swimming pools, hot tubs and water slides in a "subtropical" environment and spas.
In summer time there is fishing, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, water-skiing and sailing on Ouimet and Tremblant lakes, also hiking, rock-climbing, horse riding, minigolf, chair-lift rides, mountain biking, tennis and choice of 18-hole golf courses. There is a year-round programme of children's entertainment.
The nightlife here is lively and informal with numerous bars and European-style pubs, often with music and videos, situated in the main pedestrianised centre.
Eating out here is mainly informal bar/grill-type eateries offering the usual pizzas, pasta, chicken and steaks. A couple of top-quality restaurants, including a sushi restaurant. Prices match those in the UK.
