Magnetic Island was named by Captain James Cook in 1770 when he believed that the landmass of the island affected the magnetic compass on his ship, 'Endeavour'. More than half of the island, which is about five miles (8km) from Townsville, is a National Park known for its rugged landscape with granite boulders, hoop pines and eucalyptus trees.

The island has 23 beaches and bays, some of which can only be reached on foot. There are more than 12 miles (20km) of walking trails marked out on the island. Part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park fringes the island, which is also home to the most northerly colony of free-ranging koala bears in Australia. The island offers a wide range of accommodation. Local transport is available on the island.

Magnetic Island is a charming holiday destination characterised by the fact that it is an island community, with a resident population of over 2000. Therefore, the island is one of the most unique and varied of the Barrier Reef islands .

Magnetic Island is the only Barrier Reef island to offer a wide range of self contained accommodation and holiday houses. Tropical style resorts, units and backpacker establishments are also available.

This extensive choice of accommodation, natural attractions and activities give the island its characteristic charm and laid-back holidayatmosphere.

Magnetic island can be found to the north of Townsville, which is about 345 km South of Cairns and 300 km North of the Whitsundays , whilst Brisbane is 1280 km away to the South, Sydney 2080 km and Melbourne 3000km.

For the holidaymaker, activities are plentiful including beach horseriding, parasailing, snorkelling, water activities, harley tours, golf, tennis, reef and fishingtrips.

The Picnic Bay Mall is the island's central shopping area, and is also the main arrival and departure bay for ferries.

Walking Magnetic Island's Bush trails , would, with snorkeling off the pristine beaches , be one of the easiest to achieve and greatest, pure nature experiences anywhere in the world.

There is also a fantastic National Park (comprising more than  50% of the Island) with an abundant variety of wild life, such as Koalas, Cockatoos, Lorikeets, Eagles and Rock Wallabies .... and with, of course, the famous Bush Thick Knee or Bush Stone Curlew.
