Machynlleth is the ancient capital of Wales. Machynlleth is now a leading centre for light industry and environmental technology. Machynlleth is a centre for family holidays and "green" tourism.
The wide main street of Machynlleth enhances the varied local architecture which includes the medieval Royal House and many Victorian buildings. The Wednesday street market attracts many people from afar with its great variety of traders and craftsmen. There is also an annual Carnival in July and the Owain Glyndwr festival in September.
Machynlleth is historically famous for being the seat of the Welsh rebel Owain Glyndwr's parliament in the 15th century. For a small market town, it boasts many marvellous visitor attractions, which along with the magnificent countryside provide plenty of attractions for visitors.
Nearby is Europe's leading Eco-centre, the Centre for Alternative Technology, which leads the field in its innovative ways of researching and implementing sustainable lifestyles. Celtica is an interpretative heritage centre, which is dedicated to presenting the history and culture of the Celts.
The RSPB reserve at Ynyshir covers over 1000 acres of woodland, freshwater pools, and bogs, and is a wonderful haven for a large variety of flora and fauna. For lovers of all things Arthurian, King Arthur's Labyrinth in the nearby village of Corris, offers a spectacular boat trip back in time to explore the Welsh legends of Arthur.
Machynlleth is situated in the far south of the county of Snowdonia, 40 km south east of Barmouth, and 40km south of Dogellau.
Machynlleth has a wide variety of activities available for both residents and visitors. The Tourist Information Centre is located on the main street. The Centre for Alternative Technology is only 3 miles North of the town and attracts over 80,000 visitors a year. The coast is only 9 miles away, there are local nature reserves and any amount of excellent riverside or hill walks. The Wales National Cycle Route passes through the town. High standards of accommodation are available and plenty of places to eat out. There is every reason to visit Machynlleth! Coupled with great scenery, endless outdoor activities and walking, Machynlleth is a great destination for all age groups.
