Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the Capital of Gran Canaria, located in the north west of the island! The best of the tourist attractions in Las Palmas has to be its historical background it was founded in 1478. The City boasts an important historical and cultural heritage, of which much of this can be found in the district of Vegueta, which is the oldest quarter of the town, this was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990. Another tourist attraction within Las Palmas is its harbour, Puerto de la Luz, it is one of the most important in all of Europe and gives the City a very cosmopolitan image!

Although whilst staying in Las Palmas, you should really go exploring the rest of Gran Canarias island you will see many spectacular views and scenery, in the mountains, forests, coastal and spectacular beaches or sand dunes!

These are all easily accessible from Las Palmas, whether you hire a car and explore in your own private group or perhaps take an excursion, which you can organise through a tour operator or it is easy to find a company that does this in the centre of the resort.

If you prefer just a relaxing beach holiday and using the facilities and some of the activities that are provided along the beach, The lively Playa de las Canteras beach that is located in the capital of the island , Las Palmas!

This stretch of beach is a lagoon with ideal temperate waters, the  3km long cove with a 'La Barra' - which is a natural reef that is about 200 meters long located some hundred metres off the beach. Playa de las Canteras is also a haven for all watersports at the south of the beach where the natural rocks barrier  finish the waves come crashing making it ideal for surfers too!

This area caters for the more independent holidaymaker who wants a little city action and local culture as well as a beach. Not for those wanting a simple "sun, sea and sand" resort with English pubs and fish 'n' chips. There is mostly 3- to 5-star hotels in this area . There are also a few moderate apartments and pensions.

The beach at Las Canteras is lined with all kinds of shops, bars and restaurants.

Las Palmas is on the north east tip of Gran Canaria, (it is 35 mls N of Playa del Ingles, 17 mls N of the airport). It is on a relatively flat stretch of land on the neck of a peninsula and sprawling up the hills which form a backdrop to the city. The large harbour is on one side, and a long beach on the other.

If you are looking for an active holiday there are plenty of places for you to visit and things to do in and surrounding Las Palmas. Although there are not as many theme and amusement parks around the city of Las Palmas as the majority are based in the South near Playa del Ingles, Maspalomas and Puerto Rico the three main tourist resorts - they have a total 3 waterparks and plenty of theme parks, although still these are too far to drive as the island is so small, so if you fancy a day at the waterparks or an amusement park you could hire a car or there are plenty of excursion that will take you there too!

Las Palmas nightlife is extremely varied tending to be more sophisticated than other resorts and very cosmopolitan, but also here you will find true Spanish traditional nightlife. The centre has plenty of lovely bars and nice restaurants.

If you are looking at partying the night away then you can do it here, in true Spanish style once the sun goes down here the restaurant, bars and nightclubs come alive!! If you like the hip-swaying salsa music, Live bands, Cover bands, jazz, or anything else then you will find it there! If you fancy a gamble then Las Palmas even has a Casino.

Or perhaps take in a show, you can also do that! Whatever you fancy you will be able to find it in Las Palmas - maybe a quiet evening - nice meal and stroll along the harbour, with plenty of seaside restaurants here you have a choice of what you eat what you do whether it be lively, romantic or relaxed Las Palmas is the place to be!!! It is perfect for everyone - families, couples and groups of friends!

As you would imagine, there is a plethora of eateries including Canarian, regional, international, Argentinian, Chinese, French, Italian, Japanese, Lebanese and Mexican cuisine. Fast food is also available but mainly along the beach.
