Overview:
La Massana is one of several "ski-resorts" that, in fact, does not provide any skiing whatsoever within its environs. It is a traditional village whose growth has been spawned by its relatively close proximity to a choice of ski-mountains. Its attraction lies in its low-key surroundings, little touched by commercial trends. Arinsal has 3 green pistes, 7 blue, 7 red and 4 black; Pal boasts 4 green, 5 blue, 11 red and 1 black. Nearby Ordino, 3 mls away, has a small lift and boasts 6 green runs, 7 blue, 8 red and 2 black. All 3 resorts have snow-making machines.
The area suits those seeking a low-key base with little nightlife and more affordable skiing than that offered by mainstream European resorts. You will find mainly couples and families. There is nothing much for the younger set. Often inundated by skiing Spaniards at weekends.
The accommodation is mainly hotels which are generally adequate with little in the way of sophistication or upmarket appeal. Locality:
La Massana is in the mid-west region of the principality (4 mls NW of Andorra la Vella, 2½ mls SE of Arinsal, 140 mls S of Toulouse airport, 160 mls N of Barcelona airport ). It is situated along a steep-sided, tiered valley running south west to north east.
Entertainment/Facilities/Attractions/Things to do:
There are some supermarkets and a couple of ski-shops, otherwise small local shops. The capital, Andorra la Vella, and its tax-free delights are 4 mls distant.
The entertainment is limited during day, the nightlife is mainly confined to 2 unsophisticated discos. There is a better choice, daytime and evening, in Arinsal and Pal.
There are a few independent alternatives; the hotels provide the bulk of choice or it's a trip into Andorra la Vella.
